RPG Therapy Groups
RPG Group Therapy brings together individuals facing similar challenges to navigate a shared story. By stepping into the shoes of a character, participants can distance themselves from their immediate anxieties, allowing them to practice social skills, conflict resolution, and teamwork in a low-stakes environment. It is not just a game; it is a rehearsal for real life.
I run these groups as comprehensive 11-week cohorts:
- Week 1 (Session Zero): Preparation, character creation, and establishing safety boundaries.
- Weeks 2-11 (The Campaign): Ten sessions of gameplay where the group works together to overcome in-game adversities, building skills that translate directly to their daily lives.
Case Study: Tāhunanui Community Hub I recently facilitated a successful social anxiety program at the Tāhunanui Community Hub. The group utilized tabletop gaming mechanics to help members practice interaction and confidence-building in a safe, supported setting.
